Who Are Heart Heroes?

The inspiration behind Heart Heroes – the brave CHD children who play, laugh, and enjoy life like any other child, but also have “super powers” that have carried them through life-saving surgeries, countless doctors’ appointments, pokes, prods, and hospital stays.

Sam
Super Sam, age 6, born March of 2007, was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Right Heart (HRH), Pulmonary Atresia and Tricuspid Regurgitation. Sam has had three open heart surgeries- the most recent in November 2012, four heart catheterizations, and two valvuloplastic repairs in the cath lab. .

Ashley
Ashley, age 11, born June 2001, has Absent Pulmonary Valve. At three months of age she had her first open heart surgery. In the summer of 2008, she had her second operation to replace the valve, which does not grow as she grows. She has experienced numerous other medical interventions, rehabilitation, therapy, and lengthy hospital stays. She will experience future operations to replace her valve again. At this time, she is “heart healthy”.

Lola
Lola, age 5, was diagnosed with Truncus Arteriosus with interrupted Aortic Arch and VSD, prior to her birth in September 2007. After she was born, she spent her first weeks in the hospital, preparing for open-heart surgery to repair the defect. She underwent another open-heart surgery in June of 2011 for the aortic valve replacement. She still sees a cardiologist regularly, but is considered “heart healthy”.
